Reporting directly to the Human Resources Officer, the Intern (Human Resources) serves as a productive member of the Human Resources Department's team and is exposed to the myriad of sub-disciplines within Human Resources specifically in Learning & Development, Performance Management, and Employee Engagement.

The Agency is a regional wastewater treatment agency and wholesale distributor of imported water serving approximately 935,000 people over 242 square miles in western San Bernardino County. Over 300 personnel contribute to the success of the Agency. The Agency owns and/or operates, and maintains 5 water recycling facilities, 160 miles of sewer collection system, a potable water facility, 19 supply water well sites, 4 sewage lift stations, a recycled water distribution and storage system, 19 groundwater recharge sites, a 400,000-square foot indoor composting facility, and a 66,000 square foot Headquarters building.

This position is open until filled. There are two (2) internship opportunities in the Human Resources Department.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill two (2) vacancies and will establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur during the active status of the eligibility list. 

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Internships are limited to 25 hours week and 960 hours per fiscal year
 (July 1st to June 30th)


Note: Individuals interested in long term internships and who are currently enrolled as a student pursuing coursework in Human Resources, Industrial/Organizational Management, Training and Development, or Psychology, will be given priority.
 

Work schedule is estimated to be approximately 15 to 25 hours a week;
Office Hours are Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Remote work options may be available on a limited basis.
 
The successful candidate will be a responsible, analytical, creative, and detailed oriented individual with excellent communication (written/oral) skills. Great time management and organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously are required. Additionally, be willing to learn, and be flexible and assist with ad hoc projects as required in a fast paced and changing environment. Computer skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are critical.

Intern staff work flexible hours as established by his/her respective supervisor.  While the Agency is flexible and will strive to work around an intern's schedule, an intern's work hours will vary and be mutually agreeable between the intern and his/her supervisor.

 


EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



May include, but are not limited to the following:

Provide support to department staff in accomplishing human resource management programs including training and development, performance management, and employee engagement  

Contribute to special projects and new initiatives such as research, solicitation, and implementation of an electronic performance appraisal system and a learning management system

Draft flyers and communication materials and support the development of marketing and communication plans to promote programming and initiatives

Schedule trainings, and coordinate facilities and materials for training

Clearly communicate with Agency staff and consultants  to inform, clarify, update, and problem solve important information in support of providing outstanding customer service.

Conduct surveys and performs administrative research and statistical or financial analysis

Perform the full array of duties assigned including professional administrative/technical work on special projects.

Compile data or materials and create spreadsheets, prepare reports, manuals, and publications.

Participate in the design of forms and the implementation of systems.

Prepare research in the resolution of administrative or operations concerns/problems.

Provide support to department staff in accomplishing human resources management programs including recruitment/selection, benefits administration, respond to letters and phone calls regarding application and employment processes, and assist with forms completion and answering questions

May assist in the development or implementation of new or modified programs.

Participate in pulling documents and filing information.

Limited travel to offsite locations may be required from time to time.

Perform other related duties as required.



QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES:


EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.

Graduation or current enrollment in undergraduate or graduate studies in an accredited college or university with major course work in Human Resources, Industrial/Organizational Management, Psychology, Training and Development, Communications, Business or Public Administration/Management, or closely related field. Preference will be given to individuals who are currently enrolled in coursework for any of the aforementioned disciplines. 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
A valid class "C" California driver's license.  
 
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Principles and practices of public personnel administration; principles and procedures of research, basic statistics, methodology and administrative analysis; basic technical and administrative practices and procedures of assigned area; fundamental research and data control methods; principles of data collection, and research techniques and methods; principles of composition, basic report preparation and writing; graphic and tabular presentation of data, modern office practices and equipment including a computer and applicable software; record-keeping and filing practices and procedures; proper English, spelling and grammar.
 
ABILITY TO:
Gather, organize, interpret, and analyze information and data; prepare and interpret tables, charts, graphs, and flow charts; organize, set priorities and exercise sound judgment within areas of assigned responsibility; understand and follow written and oral instructions; prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, correspondence and other written materials; exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, varied and confidential personnel issues and employee situations; organize and maintain specialized files; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work; operate office equipment including a computer and applicable software; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; formulate options and make recommendations.
